Black Belt Promotion October 2010

Congratulations to Instructor Steve Leech on his promotion to 2nd Dan Black Belt on Saturday 2nd October 2010.

Steve has written a testimonial below.
Having been a member of the Blackbelt Zone Fitness Academy for over 3.5 years, I am sorry to be moving on as my job takes me elsewhere. I would just like to share a few of my thoughts with you all. I first started my Martial Arts training when I was 8 years old, at my local Karate club. Since then I have trained in several different clubs and disciplines including Kick Boxing, Thai Boxing and Karate. With just over 20 years of experience I can say that the standard of training and the atmosphere of clubs can vary greatly! Joining the BBZFA in January 2007, following a couple of years lapse, Master Tony not only brought me back up to my previous standard, but far beyond. With his coaching I achieved three gold medals and a world title at my first competition in over 5 years. I'm not writing this to boast, but to pay testament to the quality and standard of training the BBZFA provides, and the commitment that is shown to its students. In addition, I was given the honour of becoming an Instructor and achieving my first ever 1st Dan (it was well worth the wait!). I had previously been sceptical about the worth and meaning of the grading systems, but working towards my 1st Dan under Master Tony made me realise that there is far more to Martial Arts than just physical training. It is a journey to be relished as you meet the challenges along the way. In addition, becoming an Instructor also helped me to discover that Martial Arts is also about helping other people to achieve their goals, and not just about your own training. On both of these points, I believe the BBZFA is an outstanding school for development in a team environment and there is nothing better than seeing students helping each other with techniques and making progress together. In running my own branch of the club in Amesbury, I was able to experience first just hand how much work goes into teaching a class! But I also learnt how thoroughly rewarding it is to teach and develop students, and introduce them to world of Martial Arts.

I would also like to thank those who have helped me on my journey; all the students that have sparred with me in the run up to competitions and gradings, partnered me in class and suffered the bruises of 'block and counter' drills. Special thanks to Aaron, Chase, Matt and Travis who sparred with me and helped me to get through my 2nd Dan grading. Thanks also to the junior members who encouraged me and kept me pummelling that heavy bag on the 3rd round - your help was much appreciated! Achieving my 2nd Dan at the BBZFA was an honour and I can say it was by far the toughest physical challenge I have ever faced, which in itself was a mental challenge to overcome too.
